![]() soil to begin the legal process to request protection in the United States.Īfter a pandemic policy shut down asylum processing at ports of entry completely, asylum seekers desperate to bring their cases to the United States increasingly turned to crossing without permission - often taking risky routes over the border wall, through desert, mountains and rivers, or on easily capsized panga boats in the ocean - to try to reach safety. Rather, he said, they will look for “suspicious automobiles.”ĬBP began placing officers on the limit line after asylum seekers, mostly Russians, began using the car lanes last year as a way to reach U.S. However, he did not anticipate that they will ask for documents from every traveler. Only INM officials will have authority to ask travelers for proof of documents necessary to enter the port of entry, according to González Gutiérrez. Those who don’t have proper documents, Mexican officials said, will be taken to a Mexican immigration station for processing. Officials from Mexico’s immigration agency, the Instituto Nacional de Migración, or INM, will run the inspection point and will be accompanied by security forces working in shifts, among them the Tijuana municipal police, state police from Baja California and the Mexican National Guard. ![]() (Alejandro Tamayo/The San Diego Union-Tribune) ![]() The inspection point will operate 24 hours a day. It will be set up in both the Ready Lane line and the trusted traveler lanes used by SENTRI holders roughly 100 yards from the border and near a pedestrian bridge that crosses over the waiting lanes, according to Mexican authorities. Officials announced the pilot program Wednesday after a meeting among González Gutiérrez, Tijuana Mayor Montserrat Caballero, Consul General of the United States in Tijuana Tom Reott, and others. “I’m pleased that they are taking new actions to speed up crossings,” he said. Gustavo de la Fuente, executive director of the Smart Border Coalition, called the pilot program a wise decision, since it could lead to the opening of more lanes. “We are staffing quite a bit more workload with the same resources,” San Ysidro Port Director Mariza Marin told the Union-Tribune in September, noting that agency hiring suffered at the onset of the pandemic. The crossing has yet to reopen, with CBP citing limited resources as the reason. “The only thing we’re doing is protecting the infrastructure that we have to accelerate crossings, reduce wait times and ensure that this port of entry is used for what it should be used for.”īusiness communities and commuters have for years complained about the extended wait times at the border, particularly since the pandemic closing of PedWest, a pedestrian crossing near the Las Americas outlets on the U.S. “We’re not keeping or impeding anyone from requesting asylum,” González Gutiérrez said. González Gutiérrez emphasized that the idea of training Mexican officials to guard the zone is to “accelerate the flow of traffic during a busy season” and that they are meant to discourage “irregular activities.” “Five or 10 years ago it would’ve been unthinkable to see the Mexicans say ‘yes’ to something like this.” “Mexico for decades did not want to be seen as an auxiliary or an appendage of U.S. screen people en route to its territory is part of a larger change that has happened over the past several years in the two countries’ relationship, according to Adam Isacson of the Washington Office on Latin America.

I haven’t been able to practice as much as I would have liked to this week (who knew February was going to be so busy?). I’m continuing to practice my free motion quilting skills by working my way through Angela Walters new book, Free-Motion Meandering. I did ditch quilt between the blocks and.Welcome back to week 3 of the Free-Motion Meandering blog hop. The quilt below is one of the first ones that I free motion quilted. It's very good practice, too, because you'll be starting and stopping for each block! You, in effect, get to start over in each block with a clean slate. The advantage to quilting it this way is that any excess quilt top or batting in an individual block will be contained in that block. If that is the case, I strongly urge you to consider ditch quilting between the blocks and then meander quilting each block individually. I'm not sure what the design of the quilt is, but I'm assuming that if this is your first quilt, that it is constructed of blocks set in rows, in either a straight or on-point layout. For a poly batting you may want a few extra pins to accommodate the 'slipperiness'. But I always use either a cotton or a wool batting. ![]() If I can regularly feel at least two pins under my hand, that's generally enough basting. Pin BastingCheck out our page Layering and Basting a Quilt for a step by step discussion of the process.Īfter the quilt is pin basted, I place my palm down on the sandwich in several places. Double check the packaging your batting came in to be sure that it isn't another 'tie only' kind.įor future quilts, as you are getting comfortable with machine quilting, I suggest using a 100% cotton batting because of it's tendency to 'stick' to the cotton fabrics used in your quilt top and backing. This type is meant to be tied only and not machine quilted. I'm thinking particularly here of a polyester batting called 'Fatt Batt' manufactured by Mountain Mist. If the batting is so thick that the presser foot isn't clearing it as you move the quilt sandwich, it can't help but get pushed around by the presser foot during the stitching. You'll need to check your sewing machine's manual to see if you can. If you are using a high loft (thick) batting, you may need/want to raise the height of the presser foot, if your sewing machine will allow it. Polyester Quilt BattingPolyester fibers are more 'slippery' than cotton fibers, so a polyester batting is going to take more safety pins to hold everything in place. ![]() I think the bunching of the top and batting is coming from two things: 1) the polyester batting, itself, and 2) the amount of basting. ![]() It seems almost like it's a rite of passage, though one we could all do without! ReplyIt's a total bummer to remove quilting.but every quilter I know has done it at one time or another. Please let me know your thoughts and suggestions. I'm hoping after I remove most of the meander stitching that I will be able to ease the extra in. Or, am I stretching the quilt sandwich too tight when I do the meander quilting? Is this a basting problem? I pin basted it 4 times (checking front and back) to be sure it was smooth before I started quilting it. I started at the center top and stitched to the right towards the inner border (which I had already stitched in the ditch with a walking foot).Īfter meandering approximately one-fourth of the quilt, I saw that the top and polyester batting (higher loft) have shifted to the right and I now have an excess of approx. I'm ripping out meander stitching on my first quilt (twin size). ![]() In the smell-only condition, the dogs were slower than they were with all the cues or with the sight cue, and they were faster than in the sound-only situation. In other words, seeing the person was far more effective than only hearing her. In the situation with all the cues and in the sight-only situation, the dogs were about three times faster than in the sound-only situation. The interesting detail is in how quickly the dogs located the person. When it came to only one cue at a time, the sight, sound, and smell situations were each about equally effective in helping the dog, although none was as effective as all three cues at once. They timed the dog in each situation to see how long it took him to find the person in the testing room and get a treat.Īs you would expect, the dogs found the person almost every time when they had all three cues – sight, sound, and smell. They tested 11 dogs in an experiment that allowed the dogs to detect the presence of a person by smell only, sight only, sound only, or using all three senses at once. ![]() Megumi Fukuzawa and Marina Watanabe looked at how sight, sound, and smell can cue dogs to a person’s presence. Have you ever wondered which would be easier for him to understand, spoken words or visual cues? What is the most effective way of communicating with your dog? Recent research from Nihon University, in Japan, helps answer this question. But no doubt, you do a lot of talking to your dog, too. Using dog training hand signals is a remarkable way to train your dog.You may have seen deaf dogs responding to the hand signals of their owners, and perhaps, you use hand signals with your own dog. If he comes over give him the treat and plenty of praise. ![]() Say ‘come’ at the same time and move backward by a few steps. Start slowly and bring the treat past your dog’s nose. Sweep your arm forward and allow your hand to touch the opposite shoulder. Begin by holding your arm straight to the side and parallel with the ground. Starting with your dog in front of you hold a treat in your fingers. To teach your dog to come to you when called, use the following dog training hand signals. ![]() If he gets it right, yes you guessed it, give him the treat! When you use dog training hand signals to teach this command you are leading your dog’s nose down as you repeat the command. As you do so bring the treat past your dog’s nose and say ‘down’. Then bring your arm down, keeping it straight until it hangs at your side. Hold a treat in your fingers and raise your hand above your head. To teach your dog to lie down, using dog training hand signals, Buster should be sitting in front of you. If he gets it right give him the treat and praise him. As you repeat the command you are leading his nose upwards. Bring the food past your dog’s nose as you do this and say ‘sit’ at the same time. Hold a treat in your fingers at your side and bring it up slowly folding your arm as though you are going to throw the kibble over the same shoulder. To teach your dog to sit using dog training hand signals, let your dog stand in front of you. Let’s examine the basics of teaching your dog to sit, lie down, and come using dog training hand signals. In time your dog will sit, lie down or come when called without the promise of a treat. When your dog can obey the hand signal alone, with the promise of a kibble reward, you will remove the reward. You can do this by using the hand signal and voice command together about 50% of the time and the hand signal alone for the other 50% – until your dogs learn what is expected of them. Once the action is done repeatedly you will eventually be able to use the hand signal on its own.Īs you progress with dog training hand signals you will be able to gradually get your dog to obey you without uttering a word. This means that in your dog’s mind the word and the signals are one and the same. To get started you will need a few bits of kibble and an eager, hungry dog.ĭog training hand signals will only be effective if your dog has learned to associate a hand signal with the appropriate command words. Hand signals are hand movements that dog owners and trainers can use to teach their dogs the basic commands of ‘sit’, ‘stay’, or ‘down’. Using dog training hand signals is a fun and effective method for teaching your dog the basics of good manners and obedience. The aircraft that have over time Always caught my eye and heart the most were certain WW1 with lozenge. Much thanks for your time and thoughtful reply. I'm working into dying some fabric for wing covering for 1/3 to 1/6 scale after all I'v seen that's lozengeless. What's the difference between the 4 and 5 color patterns? Goodness, the Germans had wind tunnel machines to test out new plane designs, I should think there was some chemist or scientist with a plan behind at least some of it. Has anyone converted the Windsock Datafile lozenge colors into HTML codes? Color books are scarce and though someone posted a website with a color converter the link had been broken when I tried it. Many of the WD books all seem to have the same page at the back for lozenge. If anyone could point to particular lozenge patterns or the best guess color matching it would be great. ![]() in real harmony with forest and autumn colors. I noticed a WW1 model done in a highly effective pattern (you didn't catch the design repeat like you sometime can't help but notice.) and the colors (5?) seemed tan/brown/red and a couple greens. Given the pigments from the era, was there a scientific basis to the colors chosen or were they more a diverse spectrum of primaries to add to the eye effect? Was there study done of the pattern of geometric shapes? There's some bubble shape camo too. but sometimes the underside was a brighter color lozenge, and other times light blue. Yes I understand the different colors as perceived by the eye. Especially aircraft like the LVG C.VI benefited (at least from the top surface). But there was value in coloring the wings with lozenge, they were substantial in size. goodness knows with some of the marks and aircraft art it was contradictory. Two questions I'd like to toss out pertain to the colors and the patterns. Given Epson didn't make their Lightfast/Colorfast dye back then, one can see how what we're left with has changed so. There was certainly a conclusion it was near impossible to pin point from the relic fabric with us today what it looked like before the fuel, soot, sun, time, and bullets took their toll. I previously read some excellent thoughts from Mark Miller and others regarding matching WW1 era colors and patterns for lozenge. Lastly, Excel allows you to perform multiple regression analyses simultaneously and combine the results in one convenient report.Īnother benefit of using Excel for regression analysis is its ability to handle large datasets. You can also visualize and interpret your results easily with Excel's charts and graphs. Firstly, it is user-friendly and does not require any programming knowledge. Benefits of Running a Regression in ExcelĮxcel's regression analysis tool comes with many benefits. For example, logistic regression can be used to predict the likelihood of a customer purchasing a product based on their age, gender, and income. It is commonly used in marketing and medical research to predict the likelihood of a certain outcome based on a set of variables. Logistic regression is used when the dependent variable is binary, meaning it can only take on two values, such as yes or no, true or false, or 0 or 1. This type of regression is useful when analyzing data that has a curved trend, such as in financial forecasting or predicting population growth. It involves fitting a curve to the data points instead of a straight line. Polynomial regression, on the other hand, is used when the relationship between the variables is not linear. It analyzes the relationship between two variables by finding the line of best fit that minimizes the distance between the observed data points and the predicted line. Linear regression is the most common type of regression analysis used in Excel. Understanding the Basics of Excel RegressionĮxcel offers users various types of regression models, including linear regression, polynomial regression, and logistic regression, to name a few. By identifying and removing outliers, regression analysis can provide more accurate results and insights into the relationship between variables. Outliers are data points that are significantly different from the rest of the data and can skew the results of an analysis. Regression analysis can also be used to identify outliers in data. Multiple linear regression, on the other hand, involves analyzing the relationship between three or more variables, where one variable is still considered the dependent variable and the others are independent variables. Simple linear regression involves analyzing the relationship between two variables, where one variable is considered the independent variable and the other is the dependent variable. There are two main types of regression analysis: simple linear regression and multiple linear regression.
